Walk into any kirana store in India and you will see liquids packed in pouches: edible oil, ghee, fruit pulp, sauces, buttermilk and more. Pouches are cheap to produce, light to transport and easy for customers to use. Behind most of these pouches is a liquid FFS (Form-Fill-Seal) machine. In this guide we explain how a liquid FFS machine works, which products it is best suited for, and how to choose the right one for your food business.

What Does “Form-Fill-Seal” Mean?

A form-fill-seal machine does three jobs in one continuous process:

  • Form: It shapes a flat roll of packaging film into a tube.
  • Fill: It doses a measured quantity of liquid into the tube.
  • Seal: It seals the tube at the top and bottom to create a closed pouch, then cuts it free.

Because the pouch is made on the machine itself, you do not need to buy pre-made pouches. You buy film in rolls, which is usually cheaper and takes up far less storage space.

How a Liquid FFS Machine Works, Step by Step

1. Film Unwinding

A roll of printed laminated film is mounted at the back of the machine. Rollers pull the film forward at a steady tension. Many machines include a print registration sensor (photocell) so that your logo and text appear in the same place on every pouch.

2. Forming the Tube

The film passes over a forming collar, which wraps it around a vertical tube. The two edges overlap and a vertical sealer joins them, creating a continuous film tube.

3. Bottom Sealing

Horizontal sealing jaws close across the tube to create the bottom seal of the first pouch.

4. Dosing the Liquid

A filling system measures the product and releases it into the tube. Depending on the product, this may be a volumetric piston, a pump or a flow-based system. Accurate dosing matters: overfilling gives product away free, while underfilling can break legal metrology rules and upset customers.

5. Top Sealing and Cutting

The film moves down by one pouch length, and the sealing jaws close again. This single action seals the top of the filled pouch and the bottom of the next one. A knife cuts the finished pouch free, and it drops onto the outfeed conveyor.

The cycle repeats continuously, producing pouch after pouch.

Which Food Products Suit a Liquid FFS Machine?

Liquid FFS machines work well for free-flowing and moderately viscous foods, including:

Product Notes
Edible Oil One of the most common uses; consistent volume is key.
Ghee May need temperature control to keep it flowing.
Fruit Pulp Fibrous products need a suitable dosing system.
Sauces and Ketchup Thicker products need the right pump or piston.
Buttermilk and Lassi Dairy hygiene standards apply.
Flavoured Syrups Suited to small pouch sizes.

Always test your actual product with the supplier. Viscosity, temperature, particle size and foaming all influence the choice of dosing system.

Advantages of Liquid FFS Packing

Lower packaging cost: Film on a roll costs less than bottles, jars or pre-made pouches.

Less storage space: A few rolls of film replace thousands of empty containers.

Lighter freight: Pouches weigh much less than bottles, cutting transport costs, which is important when you distribute across India.

Affordable pack sizes: Small pouches let you reach price-sensitive customers with lowcost packs.

Automation: One continuous machine replaces several manual steps, reducing labour and contamination risk.

What to Check Before Buying

Fill Accuracy and Repeatability

Ask how accurate the machine is at your pouch size and how simple it is to adjust the fill volume.

Seal Quality

Leaking pouches lead to returns and damage the brand. Ask about sealing temperature control and how the machine copes with oily products, which can contaminate the seal area.

Pouch Size Range

Can one machine pack several sizes? How long does a changeover take?

Hygiene and Cleaning

Contact parts should be food-grade stainless steel and easy to dismantle and clean between batches or product changes.

Film Compatibility

Confirm which laminate structures the machine can seal, and work with your film supplier to choose a film suited to your product and shelf life.

Service and Spares

Sealing jaws, heaters and sensors are wear parts. Make sure genuine spares and responsive support are available near you.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Choosing on speed alone: A fast machine with poor seals costs more in waste than it saves.
  • Ignoring product behaviour: Ghee that solidifies or pulp that clogs needs the right dosing setup.
  • Skipping operator training: Correct film threading and temperature settings make a big difference to output quality.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a liquid FFS machine pack both oil and ghee?
Often yes, with the right settings and, for ghee, suitable temperature control. Discuss your exact products with us.

Do I need printed film?
Not strictly, but printed film with registration marks gives a professional retail pack.

Is a liquid FFS machine suitable for a small business?
Yes. It is one of the most costeffective ways for small and medium food brands to move from manual packing to automation.
